UPA Trust vote: National shame intimidation trade of MPs

2008-07-23 06:41:57 - Trust vote saw the national shame and charges of horse-trading, intimidation of MPs were levelled from both sides of motion for and against the vote in Indian parliament.The way the dirty linen walked in lower house of parliament,the debate live on all channels showed the worst standards of Indian lawmakers put each Indian hang his neck in shame.Words of shame,shame bursted and Deputy Speaker Charanjit Atwal adjourned the House briefly.

The national shame was telecasted after evening hours on July 22 live on vote of confidence .UPA has won the trust vote ,the manner the entire show unfolded put the nationalism to shame,leaders kicking each others on their belts with charges and counter charges.

Indians and people all over the world paid immense importance to the historical event and were glued

with the respectives channels to hear todays leaders debate in parliament on various issue but Alas! this is the state of affairs of the lawmakers has left each indian with heavy heart.Peoples are losing faith in their leaders and Tuesday parliamentary behaviour has not elevated their image but amused their way of expression,behaviour.

Lok Sabha today witnessed high drama when a BJP member walked into the well of the House with a bagful of currency notes which, he claimed, was given to him by a Samajwadi Party leader in return for his support in the trust vote. Amidst a flutter, Deputy Speaker Charanjit Atwal adjourned the House briefly. Trouble broke out again when Ashok Argal, a BJP member from Morena, Madhya Pradesh and others took out wads after wads of currency notes to substantiate their claim that horse trading had taken place and a heavy amount of cash was used to bribe the MPs to buy their support for the confidence motion.

The Congress described that display of money in the House as the most unfortunate development in parliamentary history. Talking to the media outside the Parliament building, party leader Ashwani Kumar said that the opposition has already lost the confidence motion and therefore it is indulging in such gimmicks. He blamed the BJP MPs for bringing down the dignity of Parliament. RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav claimed that the drama was enacted by BJP to tarnish the government"s image.

The Samajwadi Party leader, Mulayam Singh Yadav has demanded the arrest of BJP MP Ashok Argal who made allegations of bribery in the Lok Sabha.

BJP leader V K Malhotra said that the benefits of economic growth have not reached the poor as, according to him, India"s rate of inflation is highest in the world. He charged the government of failing to tackle terrorism, internal security and other issues confronting the common man.

Mr. Lalu Prasad Yadav strongly favoured the nuclear deal saying it is not intended to hurt any particular community.

Speaker Somnath Chatterjee assured some agitating BSP members that he will examine their allegations of intimidation by the CBI.

As the House resumed business at 6.30 in the evening after two consecutive adjournments, PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti said, the deal is in no way against any community in particular. Similar views were also expressed by the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference leader Omar Abdullah. He said the nuclear deal is a historic one and will be an important milestone to achieve energy security for the country.

UPA government has won the trust vote with 275 votes in favour and 256 against the confidence motion moved by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Ten members were absent in the House of 541. Lok Sabha Speaker Mr. Somnath Chatterjee declared the result.

Earlier, replying to the two-day debate on the trust motion, sought by the government, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh strongly refuted the opposition allegations and said making full use of atomic energy with other sources of energy is essential to maintain the tempo of growth. The 6-page speech was placed on the table of the house following repeated disruptions by opposition members. The Prime Minister reiterated that the Indo-US civil nuclear deal will end India"s isolation and nuclear apartheid and enable the country to take advantage of international trade in nuclear materials, technologies and equipment.

Former Prime Minister, Mr. A B Vajpayee and three other MPs, were allowed to exercise their franchise from the lobby due to their ill-health. Earlier, as the Prime Minister started replying to the debate, the opposition members started shouting following which his reply was tabled in the House.

The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said the victory in the confidence vote as unambigous and expressed his gratitude to the MPs who voted for the government.

Telugu Desam leader K Yerrannaidu charged the government with pressurizing the MPs opposed to the deal through different agencies. He said the deal will make India a junior partner of the United States. The Lok Janashakti Party leader, Ranjeeta Ranjan blamed the opposition for tarnishing the Prime Minister"s image.

JMM leader Hemlal Murmu praised Dr Manmohan Singh for taking such a bold step to build up energy supply. AIMIM leaderAsaduddin Owaisi also supported the Indo-US nuclear deal.

Meanwhile, reactions over the allegations of bribe continue to pour in from different political parties.

The Congress party leader Mr. Ashwini Kumar blamed the BJP MPs for lowering the dignity of Parliament by display of money in the House. The Samajwadi party leader Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav described the incident as the conspiracy of BJP. He demanded a thorough investigation of the episode.

The CPIM General Secretary Mr. Prakash Karat demanded appropriate action from the Speaker before taking the trust vote on the issue. He charged that during the last 48 hours MPs belonging to opposition parties were approached to switch sides in lieu of money.

The BJP President Mr. Rajnath Singh demanded the resignation of the Prime Minister following allegations of bribery to his party MPs to abstain from voting. The speaker adjorned the House sine die.
