An official spokesman in Srinagar confirmed the arrest of about a dozen separatist leaders including Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Mauvi Mohd. Umar Farooq. The spokesman added that the step has been taken to maintain law and order.
Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Omar Farooq duo separatist leaders along with others were arrested at their homes on Sunday night, hours before the curfew defiance rally was due to begin in Srinagar. Thousands of Muslims held a protest rally called by separatist leaders in Srinagaron Friday,authorities announced the curfew early on Sunday, saying it was a “precautionary measure".Vehicle mounted with loud-speakers were seen moving in the city warning people not to defy the curfew and maintain peace and harmony.
The Jammu and Kashmir Governor Mr. N.N. Vohra has reviewed the situation in the State and has appealed to the people to maintain calm. He has also ask them to extend their cooperation to the administration to restore peace and order.

SAYSS emerging Mass movement in Jammu has called for 24 hrs Jammu close,wheels,traffic jam, blockade upto 31 August 2008.and has extended the Jammu bandh upto August 31. The Convener of the Sangarsh Samiti, Leela Karan Sharma said that although all the three rounds of talks with Government were held in cordial and on positive note, the final decision lies with Governor.

Army is guarding the 400-km long Lakhanpur-Srinagar National Highway to ensure free flow of traffic between the valley and rest of the country. A police spokesman said in Jammu that the vehicular traffic is plying normally on the highway and fruit-laden trucks are reaching their destinations in Delhi and other places. The spokesman said, oil tankers and trucks, carrying essential supplies, are also reaching the valley without any disruption.
